The following courses listed below are choices for the 2020 S.T.A.R. Program. Please take the time to review, and select the courses which will best meet your safety training and upgrading needs.
Successfully completing any Two S.T.A.R. Safety Courses or One S.T.A.R. Safety Course and One Training Upgrade listed below in 2020 are necessary to be qualified in the 2020 S.T.A.R. Program.

Abrasive Blasting SSPC-7 (16 HOURS)
This course is designed to certify operators of dry abrasive or portable centrifugal blast cleaning equipment. It covers principles of surface preparation, surface cleanliness, surface profile, dust and debris control, and abrasives. The program’s primary focus is the certification of the blasters who demonstrate proper blasting techniques during the hands-on session.
A.C.E. Fall Protection (8 HOURS)
Upon successful completion of the end-user classroom training, the student will be able to pass a written examination demonstrating comprehension of hazard awareness and the basic selection, inspection, and safe use of fall protection systems and materials when in accordance with the Federal OSHA Laws and (EM385 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers).
Aerial Lift Operator Training/Fall Protection Awareness Training (3.5 HOURS)
This course is designed to be general in nature and addresses issues regarding Responsibility, safety procedures prior to operating aerial platforms, and finishes with hands-on. The fall protection course is designed to heighten awareness, knowledge and the elimination of fall hazards. Emphasis will be placed on the Identification of fall hazards, types of fall protection, safe work practices, fall hazard assessment on the job, hands-on training with P.P.E. equipment. (Aerial Lift Card valid for 3 years.)
AMES Automatic Taping Tools (16 HOURS) *NEW*
Students will gain hands-on experience while learning the parts, functions, safety, and maintenance procedures for using automatic taping tools. These experiences will also include the operation of the loading pump, loading procedures, proper holding techniques and the taping sequence.
AMES Automatic Taping Tools Certification *NEW*

Architectural Glass & Metal Technician (AGMT) Certification Program (8 HOURS) *NEW*
This program is designed to provide independent assessment, through written and practical means, of the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the experienced glazing technician in: Glazing Theory and the ability to practically apply that knowledge. Utilization of tools of the glazing trade and demonstration of safe work practices. Demonstration of competency in interpreting Construction Drawings and ability to layout and install various types of glazing systems for glass and architectural panels.
Note- This is not a training program and is not intended for inexperienced technicians. This is a certification class. Applications must be submitted 5 weeks prior to the exam date.
Prerequisites: Must be able to demonstrate at least 7,500 hours of glazing work withing 5 years or more.
Coating Application Specialist Intermin Level ll Exam Prep (16 HOURS)
Preparation for the Coating Application Specialist Interim Level ll Exam.
Coating Application Specialist Intermin Level ll Exam (8 HOURS)
A training and certification program designed to meet the requirements for a level 2 certified Coating and Lining Application Specialist set forth in the body of knowledge contained within the SSPC ACS 1/NACE No. 13 Joint Standard and in accordance with ISO 17024.
Confined Space Training (16 HOURS)
OSHA estimates that 63 deaths and more than 12,800 injuries occur every year in workplaces affected by its permit-required.
Commercial Faux Finishes (20 HOURS)
This course allows novices or seasoned professionals to learn about the products and application techniques developed for the professional faux finisher. This intense class will cover everything needed to bring IUPAT painting and decorating tradesperson skills to a higher level. Starting with the basics, and progressing through the full range of Faux Effects products the course participant will complete a number of samples.
Commercial Wall Covering (12 HOURS)
This course is designed to provide an overview of state-of-the-art wall covering tools and techniques used by some of the prominent manufacturers in the trade. A blend of classroom instruction and hands-on applications during this course will give the journey worker an introduction to how these tools and techniques may improve the quality and efficiency of wall covering work.
Construction Green Awareness (4 HOURS)
One of the most popular and potentially influential socio-economic issues currently under discussion is that of Sustainability, which includes energy efficiency and high performance and “green” building. This course will present the basics including definitions, benefits, and elements of Sustainability and will focus on related theories, practices, methods, and materials in construction, conscientious maintenance and awareness in lifestyle to ensure the quality and sustainability of our planet.
Coyne CPR/AED/FA (8 HOURS)
This course includes the Coyne emergency response, automated external defibrillation, and cardiovascular pulmonary resuscitation. They Coyne CPR/AED card is good for (1) year and Coyne First Aid is good for (3) years. In order to remain current, it is necessary to successfully complete an annual course refresher. This will include any new course information, and having the participants demonstrate proficiency in the physical skills. An annual refresher for the CPR/AEC will be available and should be taken approximately 2-3 hours depending on class size, student skill level, etc. First aid refresher is required every three years.
Decorative Finishes l Faux Effects (16 HOURS)
This course is designed to introduce the participants to the field of faux finishing and painting using cutting-edge techniques and products. You will gain the skills and knowledge through a hands-on approach to identifying the necessary tools, materials, and products to complete a selected faux finish. The participants will be able to demonstrate their newly learned skills by applying a decorative finish to a selected substrate using the finish recipe street.
Drywall Finishing Constant Flow Automatic Taping Machine (8 HOURS) *NEW*
This course is designed to introduce the drywall finisher in the basic operations of the constant flow machine.
E.P.A. Lead Renovator, Repair and Painting (RRP) (8 HOURS)
This course is intended for supervisors or owners who do work that disturbs painted surfaces in homes or child-occupied facilities built before 1978 and where more than 6 sq. ft. of interior paint in any one room or 20 sq. ft. of paint on exterior surfaces will be disturbed by renovations and the surfaces to be disturbed has not been proven to be lead-free.
Epoxy Concrete Toppings and Coatings: Ardex (8 HOURS)
This course is designed to provide participants an overview of state-of-the-art protective and decorative coating products, tools, and application techniques offered by ARDEX Engineered Cements. This course is targeted toward coating applicators that prepare the surface and apply coatings such as acrylic, epoxy, or urethane. A blend of classroom instruction and hands-on applications during this course will give participants an in-depth perspective into how these products, tools and application techniques may improve the quality and efficiency of floor coating work processes.

Glaziers FG-2 License (40 HOURS)
This course will provide the opportunity for Glaziers who are preparing to take the State of Connecticut FG-2 licensing test, to review the FTI of SNE Inc curriculum, the National Glazing Association curriculum and other materials covered on the examination. Some topics to be covered include Storefront, entrances, curtainwall systems, and the safety glazing code.
Graco Spray Pump Repair (8 HOURS) *NEW*
This course is a technical and practical exploration of air-assisted and airless spray technologies, with a particular emphasis on how sprayers work/ how to use them more effectively and profitably.
Infection Control Risk Assessment (ICRA) (8 HOURS) * NEW*
The CWPR- The Center of Construction Research and Training 8-hour ICRA awareness course provides the necessary training to understand the Infection Control Risk Assessment (ICRA) procedures for properly performing healthcare or other occupied facility construction and renovation tasks. Participants will examine the use of ICRA tools including containment, negative air, HEPA filtration, and work practice techniques. The course uses a variety of adult education classroom activities to build upon the experiences participants have working in construction, maintenance, renovation, demolition, or healthcare facility environments.
Lead Worker Training (8 HOURS)
This Lead Worker course addresses the OSHA standards related to lead exposure, corrective actions, and safe work practices to minimize exposure, and the rights and responsibilities of workers when dealing with lead. This course supplies the basic training needed when worker where lead is present.
Lead Worker Refresher (4 HOURS)
This Course is a yearly review of OSHA standards related to lead worker exposure.. (Prerequisite successfully completed an 8 Hour Lead Worker Course).
Lead Training for Deleading of Industrial Structures SSPC-3 (24 HOURS)
This course focuses on the training of safe work practices when removing lead-based coating from various industrial structures. Topics include the characteristics and uses of lead, recognizing toxic metals and materials in coatings, federal statutes governing air, soil, water, and dust, control measures and monitoring to comply with regulations.
Lead Training Deleading Industrial Structures Refresher SSPC-5 (8 HOURS)
This Course is a yearly review of safe work practices when removing lead-based coating from various industrial structures. (Prerequisite successfully completed a 24 Hour SSPC 3 Training for Deleading of Industrial Structures Course).
Lull/Forklift Training (6 HOURS)
The purpose of this course is to provide an awareness of safe work practices and safe driving skills for operators of powered industrial trucks. This training covers OSHA’s training requirements for operators of forklifts or lulls required in standard 29 CFR 1910.178
OSHA 10 Construction Outreach (10 HOURS)
This 10-hour course is designed to heighten the awareness of workers to be able to identify hazards on their work site. Topics include (3) required 1-hour topics Introduction to OSHA, electrical, fall protection. The other topics include ladder safety, hazard communication, material handling, and lockout/ tagout, confined space, air-purifying respirators, slips trips and falls. (OSHA 10 card valid in CT for 5 years.)
OSHA 30 Construction Outreach (40 HOURS)
This 40-hour course is designed to fully involve the participant with 29 CFR 1926 Construction Industry Regulations. Beginning with the Introduction to OSHA and how to navigate through the regulations. Guest speakers from OSHA and the construction industry will present topics covering the complete standard. Subpart A- General thru Subpart Z-Toxic and Hazardous Substances will be covered. (OSHA 30 card valid in CT for 5 years.)
Respirator Fit Test (2.5 HOURS)
A Respiratory Protection programs main objective is to reduce workers exposure to airborne contaminants. Call and schedule your Respirator fit testing after completing a yearly OSHA respirator training course.(covered in the OSHA 10 course, the Disaster Response Course and The Lead Worker Training Course) A medical questionnaire must be answered and a fit test passed. Participants must be clean shaven. (Respiratory Fit card valid for 1 year.)
Rigging for Cranes/Signaling for Cranes (12 HOURS)
This course covers general topics related to the safe operation of Crane Rigging, in compliance with State and Federal standards regarding selection, application, use & inspection of rigging hardware & slings used in overhead hoisting.
Scaffolding Erector and Dismantler- Safe Work Practices (6.5 HOURS)
This scaffolding course is designed to provide a general introduction to the safety requirements for constructing and working on scaffolds. Covering pre-planning, inspection, of components, load capacity, access, falling objects, dismantling, and more…
Seal-Krete Decorative Floor Coatings (8 HOURS) *NEW*
The goal of the Seal-Krete training is to educate the participants in proper floor coating inspection, surface, preparation, coatings identification, product recommendation, coating installation methods, common job-site issues, and job site best practices.
Silica Awareness (2.5 HOURS) *NEW*
OSHA'S enforcement of the new Respirable Crystalline Silica Exposure Standard (29 CFR 1926.1153) became effective 9/23/2017. This course will provide the knowledge and understanding of the health hazards associated with Crystalline Silica exposure. Specific tasks in the workplace that could result in exposure to Crystalline Silica. Also covers specific measures that employees must implement to protect employees from exposure, including engineering controls, work practices and respirators to be used. (Certificate of training issued)
Spyder Glass Manipulator Training (8 HOURS) *NEW*
This course is designed to provide Glaziers with all the basic skills and knowledge to safely and efficiently use a Spyder Crane Glass Manipulator. Course topics include: Principles of lifting, components of the Glass Manipulator, terminology of lifting, traveling and deploying the Spyder Crane, reading and interpreting load charts, using the remote control. This course is a prerequisite to the NCCCO (National Commission of Certified Crane Operators) certification of training. NCCCO Course will be scheduled upon completion of the prerequisite course.
Structural Welding AWS D1-1
During this course, participants will undergo a rigorous program of study to get them versed with the codes/standards associated with the AWS Certified Welding. Participants will learn the fundamentals of welding.
Swing Scaffold Training (10 HOURS)
In this course, participants will gain in-depth knowledge of safe assembly and operational practices for swing scaffold equipment. You will learn to choose the best combination of swing stage equipment for each job and how to use it safely with fall arresting equipment to prevent serious or fatal injury. Workers completing this course will receive a certificate that will show the General Contractor that you are in compliance with OSHA standards for suspended scaffolds. This course will include a comprehensive review and exam to conclude.
Workplace Steward Training Program (4 HOURS)
This new program provides training for District Council 11 stewards and is based on the IUPAT Top Workplace performance Plan that we have implemented.
Quick Deck (8 HOURS)
For bridge painters. Participants will review temporary work platform system awareness in accordance with Safeway Manufactures recommendations in Erecting and Dismantling of a rigid platform system. Participants will partake in erecting and dismantling a Quik Deck system.
